Studying the Antecedents of Similar-to-me Effect in Managers' Selection
Abstract
Lack of management stability negatively affects the performance of organizations and Similar-to-me (STM) effect is known to be one of its main causes. This study intends to investigate the antecedents of similar-to me effect in managers' selection. A sample of 278 managers from a total of 493 airport industry managers have filled out the research questionnaire. Research findings show that narcissism is a big antecedent of STM (0.467) and there exists a positive correlation between STM and Groupthink (0.394). Another consequence of STM is a decrease in functional conflict which is shown to have a negative impact on STM (-0.564). As it is confirmed that the destructive consequences of similar-to-me effect inroad organizations' performance, it is recommended that organizations should avoid STM in managers' selection and select managers among qualified not only candidates similar to the top manager
